One of the most frequently encountered dilemmas for a designer is the use of white tones in aspects of interior design. While on one hand, there is the constant worry of keeping the space spot-free, there is the concern of ending up "overdoing" by way of colours when opting for the other end of the spectrum. White tones, or even lighter neutral shades, have always stood for opulence, elegance and sophistication in interior design. Colours in interiors have been synonymous with bohemian or eclectic themes.
So then, do we aim for a balance? If so, how?
This is an entirely subjective approach to interior design. At Alizo, our founding couple are often at loggerheads - as one of them prefers an all-white look while the other loves a mélange of colours and earthy tones. While this is fun for the rest of us at work (wink-wink!), it sure is a pickle if our clients are also divided in their preferences. In such scenarios, our singular goal has always been to strike a balance.
White is never a bad idea for interiors. It gives the illusion of space, makes the room appear "lighter" even in the presence of bulky furniture pieces, reflects off natural light beautifully and gives the overall impression of luxury without trying too hard. One big advantage we as designers see with white interiors is the opportunity to throw in statement elements/ pieces of design that immediately uplift the space and give it a character that did not exist previously. Here are a few ideas that we have executed in the past, which have worked fabulously well for our clients who have white/ neutral tone interiors.
Here, you will see the smart usage of statement walls or ceilings against white/ neutral interiors. Although these characteristic features are neutral toned as well, one can always jazz it up with some contrasting colours or textures. However, it would be good to take into account the other elements in the space so as to not have a visual clash. While the grey wall cladding in the picture has been achieved using a wallpaper, a wall cladding would add an even greater appeal to the feature.
Here is an interesting way to play with colours in a primarily white environment - statement furniture pieces! There are no limits to experimenting here with colours, textures, patterns and even style of the furniture piece itself. They can be as distinct from the rest of the elements as possible, and will work beautifully in amping up the visual appeal of the place. You could either have one single statement piece of furniture or have multiple elements like colour-blocking cushions, throw blankets, and much more.
Flooring. A simple yet abundantly effective way to spruce up white interiors should you wish to. Imagine the spaces in these pictures with mundane floor tiles, and you will see what we mean. While the technical aspects of the type of flooring - parquet, LVT, SPC, etc., - are to be considered depending on where you live and also what you're seeking for in terms of durability, ease of cleaning and others; the other aspect one must consider is the pattern of the flooring itself. For instance, the much-loved Herringbone style of laying parquet gives a distinct appeal to any space.
Statement carpets are yet another fantastic way to enliven a neutral tone space. We are absolute fans of the ones shown here!
Indoor plants are probably one of the most cost-effective ways to complement white interiors. This would work well especially if you have large ceiling to floor windows bringing in ample natural lighting. With indoor plants, you are spoilt for choice. Some of them grow really tall and some others produce bright flowers in season - an almost sinfully stunning way to add a pop of colour to white interiors.
Some other ideas are - feature wall paintings, large standing mirrors, art sculptures, and so much more. If these aspects of interior design overwhelm you, we are just a call away to help you achieve what you desire!
